Birthday Trip
Just started a 3 week trip thru Eastern Oregon, Idaho (to visit Karen, Bob's Sister, Montana & Wyoming. Sort of a 62nd birthday celebration for Bob.
First stop was the little town of Joseph in Eastern Oregon. The town is noteworthy due to the fact that this was the ancestral home of the Nez Perce Indian tribe. In 1877, in defiance of a US Army order to relocate to a reservation in Western Idaho (under the provisions of a treaty which they never signed) Chief Joseph led his band of approx. 1000 from here across Idaho, Montana & Wyoming, attempting to join Sitting Bull's forces in Canada where they had fled after the Little Bighorn fight the year before. After evading the Army companies sent to capture them for 3 months, they were eventually captured 30 miles from the Canadian border.
The Wallowa valley where the town of Joseph is located is beautiful. We did some hikes, drove out to Wallowa lake and took the tram up the mountain for a picturesque view of the valley below. Stayed in a nice B&B for 3 nights before shoving off for Idaho. Here are some pics of Joseph.
